Sumsung’s Exynos 4412 looks like the closest competitor to the Nvidia’s Tegra 3. However, Tegra 3 has already taken the lead in terms of launch date. We expect the Exynos 4412 to launch in the first half of 2012 while the Tegra 3 has already launched in the Q4 2011.
There are few similarities. Both are based upon the quad core ARM’s Cortex A9 and will have similar peak performance level. The Exynos 4412 is expected to launch at quad core clocked at 1.5 GHz. For the Tegra 3 the four cores run at 1.3 GHz.
We expect the peak performance of the Exynos 4412 and the Tegra 3 to be of the similar level. If 4412 manages to clock at 1.5 GHz ( helped by the 32 nm process Vs 40 nm for Tegra 3), it can outsmart Tegra 3 in processing power.
Power Consumption The “Fifth Processor” in the Tegra 3 is lower power processor that will be normally active. It will consume very low power in standby and during light loads. This is an intelligent architecture. We have not yet seen something similar in the Exynos 4412. This will give Tegra 3 an upper hand in the battery life and power saving.
Graphics and Gaming
This is an interesting area where Samsung’s Mali GPU will compete with NVidia’s 12-Core GPU with support for 3D stereo. Nvidia has a scalable architecture. We will need to wait till the launch of the Exynos 4412 before we can make a comparison.
