Intel Pentium B950 Vs Core i3

Pentium B950 Vs Core i3 Pentium B950 Vs Core i3-330M Pentium B950 Vs Core i3-2310M Pentium B950 Vs Sandy Bridge i3 advance differences

A lot of people are curious about the performance of the Pentium B950 with respect to Core i3 processors. The quick answer is – in general Core i3 processors are faster than the Intel’s Pentium B950 processors. By core i3 – we are only including mobile core i3 processors.

However, core i3 processor come in different flavors and depending upon which core i3 you are talking about the differences could vary. Broadly there are two architectures belonging to the core i3 – the latest one is the Sandy Bridge based core i3 – these are sometimes called Second Generation core i3 processors. Pentium B950 also belong to the same architecture as the Sandy Bridge. Remove the Hyperthreading and some more features ( including the virtualization support) and you get Pentium B950.

Given the same clock speed the, therefore, the Pentium B950 is slightly inferior to the second generation Core i3 processors.

Then there are first generation core i3 processors, which have typically 10% lower performance for the same clock speed than the second generation core i3 processors. Additionally the 2st generation core i3 processors has substantially faster integrated graphics. Since the Pentium B950 graphics also belongs to the same architecture as the second generation core i3 – and it has the same integrated graphics, it tends to have better graphics performance compared to the 1st generation core i3 processor’s integrated graphics.

Under this broad statements we present here a list of the 1st generation and second generation core i3 processors and their clock frequencies. This will help you get a crude idea where you stand.

Table :  A list of the 1st Generation and 2nd Generation Core i3 processors and the Pentium B950 processor.

A. Pentium B950

Processor Clock Frequency
Pentium B950
2.10 GHz

B. 1st Generation Core i3 processor

Processor Clock Frequency Link to Comparison
Core i3-330M
2.13 GHz Pentium B950 Vs Core i3-330M
Core i3-350M
2.26 GHz None
Core i3-370M
2.40 GHz Pentium B950 Vs Core i3-370M
Core i3-380M 2.53 GHz Pentium B950 Vs Core i3-380M
Core i3-390M
2.66 GHz None

C .Second Generation Core i3 Processors

Processor Clock Frequency
Core i3-2310M
2.10 GHz
Core i3-2330M
2.20 GHz
Core i3-2350M
2.30 GHz
Core i3-2370 2.40 GHz

There are few quick conclusion you can draw from these tables. First the Pentium B950 will have lower performance than all of the processors listed in Table C – or the second generation Core i3 processors. The higher the clock frequency the wider the difference.

For the 1st generation core i3 processors, the Pentium B950 can be overall better than similarly clocked core i3 processors ( Core i3-330M in this case). However,  there are rarely any notebooks that come with core i3-330M – there are mostly core i3-370M or higher. We encourage the readers to take a look at the benchmark numbers for the exact comparison.

    Be warned – Be warned

The Pentium B950 comes with inferior HD Graphics 2000. It is half as fast as the HD Graphics 3000 in Core i3. If you plan to play games buy core i3 and the Sandy Bridge one with 4 digits in part number starting with digit 2.

    Kimberley,

Good point. If you are not into gaming – then whether it is HD Graphics 2000 or HD Graphics 3000 – does not matter. Bothe are good for a display. And a display is a display no matter what.

And if you are into gaming both are bad – not good enough for most games. If you are really interested in gaming with Integrated graphics – look for Trinity processors.

Now that the third generation Core i3 has launched – will you also include a table for the Ivy Bridge Core i3s
