Core i7-3517U Vs i5-3317U

- The core i7-3517U as well as the i5-3317U belong to the Intel’s Ivy Bridge series. Both are ULV ( Ultra Low voltage) processors intended for the ultra and thin notebooks.
- The Core i7-3517U is clocked 200 MHz higher ( 1.9 GHz Vs 1.7 GHz). The CPU bound programs should see a performance improvement of the order of 10%.
- Both of them come with the same HD Graphics 4000 as integrated graphics. The newer HD Graphics 4000 is 50% faster than the HD Graphics 3000 in the earlier Sandy Bridge processors.

The Core i7-3517U is the low power variant of the Ive Bridge processor. The 1.90 GHz dual core is great for enry level tasks. A turbo clock of 2.80 GHz ensures that the performance does not suffer when you need them. The integrated graphics HD Graphics 4000 is 50% better than the earlier generation HD Graphics 3000 in Sandy Bridge. Most of the high performance ultrabooks come with this processor

The Core i5-3317U is the low power variant of the Ive Bridge processor found in the entry level 11 inch Macbook Air and other OEM notebooks ( including those from Sony ). It comes with faster HD Graphics 4000 and a much better video encode and decode capability using the newer Quick Sync. The 22 nm Lithography in Ivy Bridge has helped Intel to scale turbo clocks upwards making them better than the Sandy bridge processors. The thin and sleek notebooks are going to benefit in performance.

    Is a ultrabook and the ULV processor hype worth it ? Intel and the notebook manufacturers have jacked up the prices or the ultrabook that does not come with DVD drve and does not come with Ethernet. They are also slower. If you have less features, it should cost less not mpre.

    The 3DMark06 figures make sense but the Passmark figures are a bit way out.

    But you can make it out from the clock frequencies that they have.

    Yes I think you should be good with Diablo3 in low setting ( and possibly a in medium settings).
