AMD A6-4400M Vs A8-4500M

If you wish to increase the performance of a CPU, you have two options – you can either increase the clock frequency or you can increase the number of cores.There are pros and cons of each, but, in general, doubling the number of the cores does not double the performance – You get slightly less than double the performance – more like 75% on the average. Single threaded applications do not benefit much from multiple cores.

Whether you increase the number of cores, or you increase the clock frequency, you increase the max power that the processor starts dissipating. And therefore, increasing the number of cores is accompanied by the decrease in the clock frequency.

The A6-4400M is a dual core processor while the A8-4500M is a quad core processor. This makes A8-4500M better in CPU even with slower clock, as you can see in the benchmarks below.

The A8-4500M also comes with better integrated graphics. The Intel’s HD Graphics 4000 is a better reference. The Radeon HD 7640G in A8-4500M has 256 shaders compared to 194 shades in A6-4400M. So while the A8-4500M turns out to be faster than the HD Graphics 4000, the A6-4400M is inferior to HD Graphics 4000. If you are into gaming and do not wish to loose few fps, go for A8-4500M.

Some more details of A6-4400M

The AMD A6-4400M is based upon Trinity architecture released in 2012. It is a successor to the Llano APU and comes with better Radeon HD 7520G graphics. AMD calls it APU ( or accelerated Processing Unit) since it contains the processor core as well as graphics.

The Trinity comes with improved Bulldozer architecture, that AMD has nicknamed Piledriver. In reality, it has one module that comes with two integer core and a shared floating point core. Purist hate to call it a real dual core. The new architectures comes with improved performance per clock and a better Turbo boost.

At 2.70 GHz base clock and 3.20 GHz turbo clock the processor is not slow, though still lagging seriously behind the Intel’s Ivy Bridge Core i5 and core i7 processors.

The integrated Radeon HD 7520G has only 192 shader cores of the Trinity chip (7660G has 384). while the Radeon HD 7660G is a true performer trashing Intel’s HD Graphics 4000 by a wide margin, the 7520G will have performance level between 7660G and HD Graphics 4000.

Some more details of A8-4500M

This Accelerated Processing Unit ( As AMD calls it) belongs to Trinity architecture and comes a decent Radeon HD 7640G integrated graphics. The architecture is an improved bulldozer architecture that consists of modules. Each module has two integer cores and the a common floating point core. The A8-4500M basically has 2 modules and 4 cores that is conveniently referred to as 4 core processors.

AMD has been able to deliver better performance per clock with Trinity and has also been able to reach higher clock frequency. This has made AMD a bit more competitive against the Intel’s Ivy Bridge onslaught.

    Thanks for this comparison review. I was actually in the process of deciding between these 2, particularly for since A6-4400 has higher frequency.

    Although in terms of graphics, I thought both A6 and A8 laptops also comes with a dedicated graphics card, in addtion to the HD7xxx series.

    The A6-4400M is only is a single module two integer core and 1 floating point core processor / apu. If you are heavy on floating point usage, it is a single core and its performance sucks.

    A6-4400M graphics sucks too. The graphics cores have been reduces to only 192 ( 384 is the max).

    What if the A6-4400M comes with HD7670M and A8-4500M with HD7610M.
    A6 is good enough with that Graphic Card or A8 still a better choice even with HD7610M? I want to play some games and HD7670M is the better choice but im not sure if the APU can get the best of it.
